Matterhorn

Above the clouds and beyond the limits – the Matterhorn is calling!

It is no coincidence that the Matterhorn is one of the best-known and most demanding mountain tours in the Alps. The 4,478-metre summit requires a lot of technical alpine climbing. The ascent follows the Hörnli ridge, which starts at the Hörnli hut and offers spectacular views, but also places high demands on the fitness and experience of every climber. The challenge of the Matterhorn attracts experienced mountaineers and adventurous alpinists alike.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1

The ascent to the Hörnli hut begins in Zermatt, from where we take the cable car to Schwarzsee. From there the trail first follows well-built paths winding through alpine meadows and rocky terrain. Even here the route offers breathtaking views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding peaks.

  2. Day 2

An exciting day lies ahead. We set off from the Hörnli hut in the dark early in the morning and first follow the well-marked path along the Hörnli ridge. Our headlamps light the way as we slowly approach the steeper terrain.

Shortly afterwards we leave the safe path and enter the rocky terrain that leads us towards the summit. This is where the real challenge begins: the north-east flank of the Matterhorn, which in places reaches a steepness of up to 50° and requires technical skill.

The summit draws closer, and the last metres along the exposed ridge demand full concentration once more. But the reward is great: at 4,478 metres we finally stand on the summit of the Matterhorn, surrounded by an overwhelming view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The descent again follows the Hörnli ridge. Every step requires care, as the terrain remains demanding. Back at the Hörnli hut a well-deserved break awaits us before we prepare for the rest of the descent to Zermatt.

A wild classic among mountains

Whichever ridge, aspect or face – the Matterhorn is not an easy mountain, but a majestic and iconic 4000 m summit in the Valais Alps. A must for anyone who loves demanding and impressive mountains!
